FaceTime stopped working after switching
After a switch, it can take up to a day to reactivate.
FaceTime registers against your phone number the same way iMessage does — so when your number moves to a new carrier, FaceTime sometimes needs to re-register too. The fix is nearly identical.
The fix, in order
- Toggle FaceTime off and on. Settings, then Apps, then FaceTime — flip it off, wait a few seconds, flip it on.
- Check your number. On the same screen, under "You Can Be Reached By FaceTime At," make sure your phone number is checked.
- Restart your phone.
- Set Date & Time to automatic — Settings, then General, then Date & Time. A wrong clock blocks activation.
Like iMessage, FaceTime can take up to 24 hours to re-activate after a carrier change, though it's usually quick.
If calls connect but quality is poor — or won't start
- Check your connection. FaceTime needs Wi-Fi or cellular data; if your signal is shaky, start here.
- Allow FaceTime over cellular. Settings, then Cellular — scroll down and make sure FaceTime is allowed to use cellular data.
- Check Screen Time restrictions. If FaceTime or Camera is blocked under Screen Time, calls quietly fail.
If iMessage is down too
They almost always break — and heal — together, since both register your number with Apple at the same time. Work through the iMessage guide and both usually come back at once. Still quiet after a day? Let us know and we'll take a look from the network side.
