Setting up voicemail on your new service
Voicemail starts fresh after a switch — set it up in about a minute from the Phone app's Voicemail tab.
Voicemail resets when your number moves to a new carrier — it starts completely fresh on your new service. The setup takes about a minute.
Setting it up
- Open the Phone app and tap the Voicemail tab.
- Tap Set Up Now.
- Create a voicemail password.
- Record a greeting, or use the default one.
That's it — callers can leave messages, and they'll appear right in the Voicemail tab.
The part everyone wishes they'd known earlier
Old voicemails don't carry over. Messages saved with your previous carrier stay behind when your number moves. If you're reading this before your switch: save anything you care about now — play each message and record it with another device, or check whether your old carrier's app can export them. After the switch, they're gone for good.
If the Voicemail tab only shows "Call Voicemail"
Right after a switch, voicemail service can still be provisioning on the network side. Two options:
- Restart your phone and check the tab again a bit later.
- Or just tap the call button — you can set up your password and greeting through the voice prompts instead, and the visual list usually appears once provisioning finishes.
If voicemail worked and then stopped, restart the phone and check for a carrier settings update. And if you ever forget your voicemail password, we reset it for you — no store visit needed.
