Installing a carrier settings update
It helps ensure a smooth switch to our network.
A carrier settings update is a small file that teaches your phone how to talk to its network: which towers to prefer, how to hand off calls, and how features like voicemail and Wi-Fi calling connect. After a switch, your phone may still be carrying its old carrier's settings, and this update swaps in the right ones.
How to install it
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap General, then About.
- Wait on that screen for about 30 seconds. If an update is available, a prompt appears — tap Update.
- No prompt? Your settings are already current. There's nothing to force.
When to reach for this
- Right after switching — the single most common cure for lingering post-switch weirdness.
- No Service or SOS that survives a restart — full sequence here.
- Slow data that a restart didn't fix — more on that.
- Voicemail or calling features acting oddly on the new service.
It takes under a minute, can't hurt anything, and quietly fixes an outsized share of the problems that land in our inbox. When in doubt, check for one.
